ISRAEL GALVÁN

Israel Galván de los Reyes revolutionizes the conception of traditional flamenco shows by creating his own innovative expressive language. His talent stands out as a dancer and as a scenic creator, based on technique, fragmentation, mixture and the sum of gestures. His ability to generate a new language within this art fuses innovation with respect for its deep roots, allowing him to evolve without losing sight of the essential elements that sustain it.

Son of the Sevillian dancers José Galván and Eugenia de Los Reyes, Israel was born in Seville in 1973. From a very young age, he lived naturally in the environments of stages, parties and dance academies to which he accompanied his parents, but it was in 1990 when he decided to dedicate himself to dance. In 1994 he joined the newly created Andalusian Dance Company directed by Mario Maya, beginning an unstoppable career marked by important awards in flamenco and dance both nationally and internationally.

In 1998 he presented his first show with his own company, ¡Mira! / Los Zapatos Rojos, which revolutionized the conception of flamenco. He then created a series of key works such as La Metamorfosis (2000), Galvánicas (2002), Arena (2004), La Edad de Oro (2005), Tábula Rasa (2006), Solo (2007), El Final de Este Estado de Cosas, Redux (2008), La Curva (2010), Lo Real / Le Réel / The Real (2012) and FLA.CO.MEN (2013).

Over the years, Galván has continued to innovate with projects such as Torobaka (2015), in collaboration with Akram Khan, La Fiesta (2017) at the Avignon Festival, Gatomaquia (2018) together with Circo Romanès, and Israel & イスラエル, a project with artificial intelligence performed in Japan in 2019. That same year he premiered Mellizo Doble in collaboration with singer Niño de Elche and then La Consagración de la Primavera. More recently he presented shows such as Ri Te (2022), Carmen (2024), Sevillanas Solteras (2024) and New Sketches of Spain (2024), which further cement his reputation as the most influential artist on the contemporary flamenco scene. Each of these projects reflects his unique approach to reinterpreting flamenco, fusing tradition and modernity through his personal and experimental style.

Israel Galván is an Associate Artist of the Théâtre de la Ville de Paris. During his career he has been awarded important prizes, such as the National Dance Award (2005), the Bessie Award of New York (2012), the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (2012), and the title of Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2016, among others.
